The Benefits of Open Adoption
The Benefits of Open Adoption
When considering adoption, it’s helpful to explore all options. There is no “right” path, but if you are leaning towards staying in your baby’s life, you might want to consider open adoption. Open adoption allows for contact between the birth parents, the adoptive parents and the child. The adoptive parents are legally responsible for the child and to raise him or her, but the birth parents can still keep in touch. Although you are not raising your baby, ties do not have to be cut completely. In fact, about 95% of adoptions today are open in some capacity.

Types of Open Adoption
Open adoption has two levels – fully open and semi-open. With fully open adoption, the birth parents and the adoptive parents can have direct contact. This can through phone calls, emails, letters or visits. Semi-open adoption, also known as mediated adoption, usually has a third party, such as a lawyer or social worker, pass letters or photos between families. Adoption Choices of Las Vegas is happy to work with you to determine which level would be a better fit for you. If you desire to have a relationship with your baby, then open adoption would be very beneficial to you.
The Benefits of Open Adoption
Peace of Mind
Choosing adoption may be one of the most difficult things you’ve had to do in your life, so it’s understandable if you want additional assurance that you made the right decision. When you have the ability and privilege to have a relationship with your child and his or her adoptive parents, it allows you to have more insight as to who is raising your child. Instead of constantly wondering if your child is happy and healthy, you can determine that for yourself. It can also create peace of mind for the child to know that the love for him or her is multiplied.
Additional Support
Sometimes adoptive families can be like extended families to the birth parents. This is nice because they understand your situation and can provide strength and encouragement. The adoptive family may also be appreciative that their child has more support and people on his or her team.
Answers
Instead of the birth family or child constantly wondering “what if…”, the birth parent(s) is there to answer all of the important questions. This way there are no medical background uncertainties or a lack of knowledge about his or her ancestry. The birth parents can also clear up the reason for the adoption and ensure the child knows that he or she is wanted. This is more of a benefit for the adoptive parents, the child and the birth parents.
The Benefits of Open Adoption
It’s important to do research and consult with others prior to making such a permanent decision. The landscape for adoption is continuing to change and the benefits of open adoption outweigh the cons if you are looking to stay in your child’s life.
