FAQs About Egg Donation for Same Sex Intended Parents

By Mallorey English

As you’re doing your research and getting ready to head into the unique journey of gestational surrogacy, you may run into a bit of a snag. For many men in same sex relationships, they must turn to egg donors, as they can only provide one half of the equation. However, there are many women who turn to egg donation as well. This could be due to fertility issues, age, etc. Whatever the case, these donors are heroes.

Traditionally, gestational surrogacy is done by retrieving the sperm and eggs of the intended parents. However, as we well know, same sex couples aren’t the only ones who rely on gestational surrogacies to build their families. Members of the LGBT community who are single do as well. That said, egg and sperm donors, respectively, are there to help complete the genetic puzzle at the early stages of the journey. These donors can be somebody who you already know, someone you meet later on or someone they never meet at all.

This week, Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Nevada in Las Vegas is going to address some of the most frequently asked questions about egg donation for same sex parents.

Is the process to find an egg donor different for same sex couples than it is for others?

Not at all! No matter what your situation is, you’ll always have the same process to find an egg donor.

So, then, what is the process?

Firstly, the prospective donor must submit an application to your chosen egg donation center. Once they’ve reviewed the application, the donor then goes through an in-depth screening process.

How are egg donors screened?

Prospective donors must go through a lengthy process of and undergo some psychological, medical, and physical evaluations. This will determine whether they are fit enough to actually donate their eggs. Once they’ve passed the screening process with flying colors, she’ll be ready to be matched with intended parents.

What will we know about our donor?

When you have chosen your egg donation center, and gone through the application and screening process yourself, you’ll be shown the donors that your center has to offer. These profiles should have pictures of the donors, so that you can see the physical characteristics, and information about each one. For instance, each donor’s  interests, hobbies, education and family history . Some agencies even have a baby photo of their donors, so you can have an idea what your little one may look like!

Do we have to meet our egg donor if we don’t already know them?

This is up to you and the donor to choose. If you both are amiable to meeting one another, then of course you can. But, ultimately, the decision is up to you. If you would rather not meet your donor, then it’s not mandatory that you do so.

How long does it take to select a donor?

It can vary, depending on your requirements for your donor and the particular agency and clinic you work through. However, your agency should have a wide variety of donors for you to choose from. If you have a long list of requirements that must be met, and they don’t have anyone on their end that meets those requirements, you may have to wait until they have found someone.
