Ashley’s Open Adoption Journey with Baby Emory

In early 2020, Ashley found herself facing a life-changing decision. She wasn’t in a place where she felt prepared to parent, but she knew one thing with absolute clarity—she wanted an open adoption. She wanted her daughter, Emory, to grow up knowing where she came from, surrounded by love from both her adoptive family and her birth family.
Ashley’s search led her to a same-sex couple, Mike and James, whose values aligned perfectly with hers. They believed deeply in the importance of openness, honesty, and maintaining meaningful relationships. For Ashley, it was an instant connection. She knew her daughter would be embraced by a loving, supportive family who respected her wishes.
The adoption process began in January 2020 in Reno, Nevada, where Ashley partnered with Adoption Choices of Nevada. Her caseworker supported her throughout each step—emotionally, logistically, and personally. Together, they developed an open adoption plan that centered Ashley’s comfort, her vision for ongoing contact, and Emory’s long-term well-being.
Over the past five years, this commitment to openness has blossomed into a unique and loving extended-family relationship. Ashley has stayed in close contact with Mike, James, and Emory. They’ve visited in person, shared milestones, and continued building trust and connection. When Ashley later welcomed another child, she was grateful that her younger child also had the chance to know Emory—a bond made possible through the openness of their adoption.
For Ashley, choosing adoption wasn’t about letting go. It was about expanding love in a way that honored her daughter, honored her own journey, and honored the family she carefully chose.
Through Adoption Choices of Nevada, Ashley found not only the right adoptive parents but also the support she needed to create the future she envisioned for her daughter.
