The Best Ways for Birth Mothers to Celebrate National Adoption Month

As you may already know, November is a very important month in the world of adoption. This is because all month long we celebrate National Adoption Month! This is a time to celebrate every part of the adoption triad: adoptees, birth mothers, and adoptive families alike. While everyday can be a day that you celebrate adoption and the role it has played in your life, National Adoption Month stands to let others around you partake in this celebration as well.

There’s many ways for birth mothers to celebrate National Adoption Month, as well as be celebrated by those around them, for their immense contributions to the world of adoption.

Write a Letter to Your Child

Whether you have an open or a closed adoption plan, writing a letter to your child is an amazing way to celebrate this month. If you have an open adoption plan, and the opportunity to connect with your child, write this letter with the intention for them to read it. Make it come from your heart and really express to your child all of the ways adoption has helped to form you both into the people you are today. This can help to communicate to your child that you have no negative emotions around their adoption and that you are grateful for your adoption journey. This, in turn, can offer some closure for both of you. Your adoption journey is never something that should bring with it feelings of regret or dismay, so writing this letter to your child could be an incredible way for the two of you to celebrate your story, along with their adoptive family.

On the other hand, if you chose a closed adoption plan, you can still write this letter to your child, but rather than writing it with the intention of them reading it, write it just for you. This can be a time when you fully celebrate yourself and the incredibly brave thing you did when you chose to place your baby for adoption. The part that you played in shaping your child’s life was not a small one and you deserve to be recognized for your contributions, even just by yourself.

Surround Yourself with People Who Appreciate You

Another great way for birth mothers to celebrate National Adoption Month is to surround themselves with friends and family who understand and appreciate their adoption story. National Adoption Month is not just a time for you to celebrate yourself, but for those around you to recognize and support the choice you made to place your baby for adoption. You deserve to feel supported and loved by those around you during this month and beyond! Having a few friends and family over to celebrate with you is a great way to make the most out of this very important month.

Participate in a Local Event

There are countless events occurring right now which allow for celebrating National Adoption Month. Attending one of these events will give you the opportunity to be around people who understand the adoption process and who can share in your journey. If you don’t feel comfortable going to an event in person given the current circumstances, look around and see if there are any virtual events or even try and set up your own! Chances are, there are others who are in the same boat and would love to celebrate this month with you in the safest way possible.
