Health Requirements for a Surrogate in Vegas: What You Need to Know

When you’re ready to get started on your gestational surrogacy journey, you’ll quickly find that it’s a very exciting time. Of course, there are many inquiries you’re bound to have when going through the various peaks and valleys that will be coming your way. Whether you’re more interested in who you’ll be matched with or how soon you can expect to become pregnant, your curiosity is doubtlessly high during this time.

One question in particular is probably running through your mind, particularly for those who are hopeful gestational surrogates, is What are the health requirements for a surrogate? While it seems like a pretty straightforward question, you’d be surprised at how complex it can be, given all of the moving parts it has. Adoption and Surrogacy Choices of Las Vegas will be taking a look at these moving parts for our Nevada and Colorado readers, and how they all contribute to a successful journey for all involved.

Let’s Start With the Basics

Now before we get started, we would like to say again: this is specifically for those living in Nevada. That said, other states may vary on what qualifications must be met in order to become a gestational surrogate, as well as specific agencies, so it’s important to do as much research as you can beforehand.

Here’s what you can expect as a Nevada resident. These screenings include, but are not limited to: a full physical screening, background check and psychological evaluation. These steps are necessary to show whether or not you are a good candidate for both the process and agency you choose to work with.

1) Physical Screening

To make sure that you are in the clear, physically speaking, you’ll need to undergo a physical examination with your primary care provider (PCP). He or she will check to see that you don’t have anything that would complicate your eventual pregnancy, or make being pregnant dangerous in any way for you. This not only eases the mind of your future match, but also gives your agency the green light to continue working with you.The physical screening includes a full check for any sexually-transmitted diseases, such as: HIV, hepatitis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and others. If your PCP finds any of these diseases, you will not be considered for gestational surrogacy.

2) Background Check

Before you can be matched with intended parent(s), you must undergo a background check. This will look at your medical history to see if you’ve had any previous pregnancies, and if there are any red flags in your past. This is especially prevalent if you’ve had any brushes with the law, as these can be hard disqualifiers toward your surrogacy goal. If you have felony charges, criminal activity of any kind or a history of abuse (this includes physical, verbal, sexual, emotional or substance abuse), you’ll unfortunately be out of luck. Any concerns in this vein will immediately cut off your application if they pop up on your background check.

3) Psychological Evaluation

The psych eval is performed by a licensed psychologist usually assigned to you by your chosen agency. The main job of these professionals is to ensure that you are of sound mind and aware of the full scope of your commitment to becoming a surrogate; That you weren’t, in any way, forced or pressured into becoming a gestational surrogate. It’s important that the decision to carry the intended parent(s)’ baby is completely your decision. During your evaluation, the psychologist may also ask you what your support system looks like; whether or not you have trusted friends and family members who will be there for you during the harder moments of your journey and who will be able to give you a hand when you need it.
