Beginning Your Adoption Process in Las Vegas as a Pregnant Woman

Adoption is a selfless choice to make for yourself, your baby and a hopeful adoptive family. Yet, as a prospective birth mother who has chosen adoption, the next step may be confusing. There are various reasons to choose adoption in Vegas, after all. Unplanned pregnancies may be anxiety-ridden to begin with, so adding confusion of how to start your adoption journey can only make it seem more upsetting.

But not to worry. Adoption Choices of Las Vegas will help you with beginning your adoption process. There are a few things to check off your list before finalizing your adoption journey. These include: researching and educating yourself, choosing adoptive family preferences, deciding what  type of adoption you want, discussing your birth plan, and utilizing your adoption caseworker.

Let’s break this down into more detail and walk through it together.

1. Researching and Educating Yourself about Adoption

Being aware of options and what you want for you and your baby will make the adoption process easier, and give you more control over your circumstances. The unknown will also become less scary.. You will learn what is ahead of you and what to expect. So, going into the adoption process knowing what you want will make everything go smoother and act as a great starting point.

You can look up any questions you have on our website or contact us at any time. Be sure to research adoption stories and talk to other birth mothers as well, as this may be a great benefit for you. Looking through our website alone will open your eyes to elements of the adoption process in advance to beginning your adoption plan. But, in general, being aware of the adoption agency you are using and what you want personally will help you feel more confident in your decisions.

2. Choosing Your Adoptive Family Preferences

There are a few things to consider when thinking about how you want your baby to be raised and in what environment. Adoptive families provide aspects of their life in their adoptive parent profiles, such as their religion, home town, their other children, aspirations for your child, pets, hobbies, etc. While looking through these profiles, you can decide what is important to you and what you want your child to grow up with.

If you have any other requests or preferences, be sure to consult with your adoption caseworker. For instance, if you’re willing to have a single, LGBT or transracial adoptive family raise your child. If education is important, or if you’d like your child to grow up in a diverse neighborhood or city. Let your adoption caseworker know, so we can take all these things into consideration when providing you with adoptive parent profiles.

3. Deciding What Type of Adoption You Want

The level of contact you want with the adoptive family you choose is something you will be able to discuss with your adoption caseworker. You can think about what is best for you and talk to your adoptive parents about a plan on contact as well, once you’ve selected a couple or individual and meet with them.

There are three different types of adoption to choose from: open, semi-open and closed. Each has their pros and cons, which you’ll want to research and learn about before making a decision. There is no right or wrong level of contact to choose. Only what feels right for you and your baby.

4. Discussing Your Birth Plan with Your Adoption Caseworker

This will be one step to solidify and clarify all aspects of your hospital experience. Your birth plan will include everything you want and need when it’s time to give birth. Who do you want in the delivery room with you? Do you want dedicated time with your baby after he or she is born? Do you want the adoptive parents to be part of the birthing process, or would you rather they wait in the lobby until afterwards? You are 100% in control of your adoption plan. Nothing happens without your consent.

Your birth plan does not have to be set in stone, but it’s important to at least have a tentative plan in place. This is because the hospital experience can be extremely emotional for everyone involved. Things can also change in the case of emergencies, but having a birth plan outlined beforehand will help ease your anxiety and help your adoption caseworker, the hospital staff and the adoptive parents best assist you.

5. Utilizing Your Adoption Caseworker and Adoption Counselor

Making sure you let your adoption caseworker guide you will benefit you the most during your adoption process. They are there to make sure you fully understand what is ahead and that you feel confident in your decision. Additionally, your adoption caseworker is there to walk alongside you every step of the way. He or she will meet with you one on one to help make the process as easy as possible. She will assist you in making a plan of adoption that is special and right for you.

If there is ever a time where you feel like you need more emotional support, getting adoption counseling will help to make sure you are also focusing on yourself and your health during your pregnancy. While thinking about your baby, you may forget to think about yourself, and that is where meeting with an adoption counselor comes in. Your health and safety is very important to us. Our adoption counselors are available to you before, during and after your adoption journey. If you need post-place support, our adoption counselors will be there to help you healthfully grieve and move forward.
